Submit Final Grades to Pennant

Students’ official grades must be submitted to Courses@Penn/Pennant (or Instruction Center, for Wharton courses only). Though you may have used the Canvas gradebook to calculate and communicate final grades to students, it does not directly integrate with Pennant. Final grades must be submitted directly to Courses@Penn/Pennant to become part of students’ academic records.

To begin, you should have already downloaded a CSV file of your finalized Canvas gradebook, including final grades in letter grade format. If you have not yet completed this step, see the end-of-term grading checklist page for directions.

Locate your course in Pennant

  1. Grading is located in a part of Pennant called Courses@Penn. Go to Courses@Penn and log in with your PennKey and password.
  2. In the Manage My Courses section, click “Grade submission & changes”.
  3. Select the term from the “Term” drop-down list.
  4. Select the course from the “Course Section” drop-down list. The student roster will populate below.

Enter final course grades in Pennant

There are two options for adding final grades: manual entry or file upload. You may select either option based on class size and your own preferences.

Option 1: Manual grade entry

After you have followed the steps above to locate your course in Pennant:

  1. Open the CSV of your finalized gradebook that you downloaded from Canvas.
  2. Locate the column labeled “Final Grade” (usually the next-to-last column). This should contain letter grades only.Canvas gradebook CSV file with Final Grade column indicated
  3. In Pennant, use the drop-down lists in the “Grade” column to enter a final grade for each student that matches the “Final Grade” column on the Canvas gradebook CSV.
  4. If you have entered any grades of F or I, you must also enter a date in the “Last activity” column in Pennant for that student. For Incompletes, another tab will appear where you can also adjust the expiration date and grade to which it will convert if expired.
  5. Click “Submit” in the top right corner. A warning will appear. Click “Submit” again.

For more information, see the SRFS guide to grading manual entry.

Option 2: Upload gradebook file

Note that there may be a difference in the order of students between the CSV you download from Canvas and the spreadsheet you download from Pennant. We recommend checking carefully to make sure you’re entering the correct grade for each student.

After you have followed the steps above to locate your course in Pennant:

  1. Click the “Download” button to the top left of the course roster, and open the Excel file that downloads. This spreadsheet will be pre-populated with your course information, like the example below, except the “Grade” column will be blank:Gradebook file downloaded from Pennant with Grade column indicated
  2. Open the CSV of your finalized gradebook that you downloaded from Canvas.
  3. In the Canvas gradebook CSV, locate the column labeled “Final Grade” (usually the next-to-last column). This should contain letter grades only.  Copy only the values (no headers) of this column.Canvas gradebook CSV file with Final Grade column indicated
  4. Return to the spreadsheet downloaded from Pennant. Paste the values you just copied from the Canvas gradebook into the “Grade” column of the Pennant spreadsheet.
  5. If you have entered any grades of F or I, you must also enter a date in the “Last activity” column for that student. Save the Pennant spreadsheet.
  6. In Pennant, click the “Upload” button to the top left of the course roster, and select the Pennant spreadsheet you just saved. Grades will populate in the “Grade” column of the roster. If you have entered any Incompletes, another tab will appear where you can also adjust the expiration date and grade to which it will convert if expired.
  7. Click “Submit” in the top right corner. A warning will appear. Click “Submit” again.

For more information, see the SRFS guide to grading upload files. It is also possible to upload your Canvas gradebook CSV directly to Pennant, with some modifications, as explained in this video demonstration from SRFS. Note that this video displays an older version of Canvas and some features appear differently.
