To create Wooclap polls that can count toward students’ grades, follow these steps.
Create a Canvas Assignment
- Create a new assignment in Canvas. Note that the title you give the assignment in Canvas will also be its title in your Wooclap account. These titles MUST remain the same as one another.
- On the assignment setup page, select the desired point value and assignment category, then set the submission type to External tool. While you may choose to add a due date, students will only be able to respond to a polling question while you are actively displaying it, regardless of due date.
- Click Find, then select Wooclap LTI 1.3 from the list.
- In the window that appears, select Create from scratch to create a new polling event or Duplicate an existing event to use an event you’ve already created in Wooclap. Click Continue, then Select.
- Recommended: Ensure that Load this tool in a new tab is checked to provide the best display experience for students using the Canvas mobile app.
- Configure any remaining assignment details, then save the assignment.
Configure the Wooclap Event
- From the Canvas assignment you just created, click the button to Load [assignment title] in a new window. If you prefer, you may also navigate directly to your Wooclap account and open the event that matches the assignment title.
- Add questions to the Wooclap event. In the top right of the screen, click New question to create new polls, or click Import questions to copy polls from an existing Wooclap event or upload an Excel file containing polls from another platform.
Deploy Polls in Class
- If desired, embed polls from your Wooclap event into a PowerPoint presentation, or integrate presentation slides directly into the Wooclap event.
- Publish the assignment in Canvas so students can access it, if you have not already done so.
- When you are ready for students to engage in the polls, direct students to open Canvas (in the mobile app or in their mobile or desktop browser) and navigate to the assignment you created in Step 1. Students should click the button to Load [assignment title] in a new window.
- Polls will appear on students’ screens as you deploy them. Students will only be able to respond to the poll you are actively displaying.
Be sure to allow sufficient time for students to log in, locate the assignment, and access the poll. If students are experiencing lag time in large classrooms, we recommend encouraging them to connect their device to AirPennNet, rather than the guest network or cellular data, and disconnecting any unused devices from wifi to lighten demand on the network.
Known issue
The instructions bar with the event code displays with the question, even though students must access the poll via the Canvas assignment. We are working with the vendor on a solution. If a student does inadvertently follow the on-screen instructions, they will be presented with a message that directs them to go to Canvas to access the poll.
If you are using the PowerPoint integration to display Wooclap polls on your slides, there are two potential workarounds to this issue:
Option 1: After inserting the poll into your slide, resize or drag the iframe (the window containing the poll) so that the instructions bar is off the top edge of the screen. When you place your presentation in slide show mode to display it in class, this portion of the window will not be visible.
Option 2: Add a reminder on your slide for students to access the poll via Canvas. Example pictured below.

Sync Grades to Canvas
- Navigate back to the Wooclap event page. You may do this either directly from your Wooclap account or through the assignment page in Canvas.
- At the top of the event page, click Synchronize with LMS.
- From the dropdown menu, select either Results or Participation. You may sync grades based on one or the other, not both.
View Results
To view or export a report of students’ responses:
- Click on the event title in your Wooclap account to open it.
- Click Settings in the top right corner.
- At the bottom of the settings menu, click Report. This opens a summary of responses that can be sorted either by question or participant. You may also export the report as a PDF or Excel file.
