Gradescope Upgrade Complete

Penn has completed our upgrade to Gradescope LTI 1.3.

Summer 2026 and Fall 2026 courses should use the LTI 1.3 integration. If you wish to reuse Gradescope assignments from a previous course, please use these instructions. When syncing rosters, use the “Sync Canvas (LTI 1.3) Roster” option.

Previous Gradescope assignments will be accessible via Gradescope.com and can be copied over to future courses. Grades from Gradescope assignments will persist in the Canvas Gradebook.

The Gradescope for Instructors page now includes updated directions for using the new version of the tool in Canvas.

Please contact canvas@pobox.upenn.edu with questions or for assistance with this transition.

RESOLVED – Bug: Delays to Restoring Archived Panopto (Class Recordings) Videos (7/7/26)

We have been made aware of significant delays to restoring archived Panopto (Class Recordings) videos. This process is typically meant to take no longer than 72 hours, but is currently experiencing significant delays.

Panopto has confirmed that this is a widespread issue impacting more than just the Penn community. They have also confirmed that the processes will eventually finish, though they did not say when. Panopto engineers are working on the issue, but did not give an estimate of when it would be resolved. We will provide a update when the vendor has solved the issue.

Canvas and all other third-party tools (LTIs) are unaffected. To read more, please visit this Panopto Community page.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email us at canvas@pobox.upenn.edu.

Panopto Archive Deletion Reminder

Beginning November 2nd, 2026, Panopto recordings that have remained untouched in the stale archive for 26 months are scheduled for deletion under our retention policy. This retention policy will then continue to apply going forward, so that any unviewed content sitting untouched in the stale content archive will be deleted after 26 months, on a rolling basis.

If you need to keep an archived recording, please take action before November 2nd.

To keep an archived recording:

  1. Turn on the option to include archived content in your search results.
  2. Open Panopto and search for the recording.
  3. Select Restore from Archive for the recording you want to keep.
  4. After the recording is restored, open it and play it briefly.

Panopto’s documentation explains that restored videos receive a 30-day grace period, and continued viewing or modification postpones future retention actions. Restoration can take from a few minutes up to 48 hours, and in some cases longer depending on the system load. If you want to keep a recording outside Panopto, you may also download it as an MP4, provided downloads are enabled for that video, and save it to an approved cloud storage platform such as PennBox, OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox.

A few storage notes:

  • PennBox supports individual file uploads up to 50GB, with this limit defined by our contract plan.
  • OneDrive supports uploads up to 250 GB per file via the web.
  • Google Drive supports files up to 5 TB, with a 750 GB per-user upload/copy limit within 24 hours.
  • Dropbox supports files up to 2 TB, though uploads larger than 375 GB are more reliable through the desktop app than through a web browser.

Please review any archived recordings you may need and restore or download them before November 2026.

If you have questions or would like help identifying important recordings, please contact ISC.

Gradescope Upgrade

Penn is upgrading from the Gradescope LTI 1.1 to the LTI 1.3 integration and we wanted to share some important information about this transition.

Why are we making this change?

  • The LTI 1.3 integration improves assignment linking, provides easier access to Gradescope in Canvas, and has improved authentication and security protocols. New features and enhancements will only be available to customers on LTI 1.3.

What Steps Do I need to take in my courses?

  • Spring 2026 courses should continue using the LTI 1.1 integration for the duration of the Spring term. When syncing rosters, use the “Sync Canvas Roster” option.
  • Summer 2026 and Fall 2026 courses should use the LTI 1.3 integration. If you wish to reuse Gradescope assignments from a previous course, please use these instructions. When syncing rosters, use the “Sync Canvas (LTI 1.3) Roster” option.

What happens to Gradescope content from Spring 2026 and earlier terms?

  • Previous Gradescope assignments will be accessible via Gradescope.com and can be copied over to future courses. Grades from Gradescope assignments will persist in the Canvas Gradebook.

Please contact canvas@pobox.upenn.edu with questions or for assistance with this transition.

Zoom Bug for Automatic Meeting Recording

When a series of Zoom meetings is created through the Canvas integration and set to auto-record to the cloud, that setting gets turned off if a user with a non-student role clicks the Zoom tab. This issue has been reported to the vendor and they are working to resolve it as soon as possible. We recommend that instructors verify that Zoom meetings are recording once they start.
