Panopto is Penn’s video creation and storage platform that integrates with Canvas.
In Canvas, Panopto is labeled Class Recordings in the course navigation menu. If this item does not appear in your navigation menu, you will need to enable the tool before accessing Panopto via Canvas.
This page is intended for instructors. Students should review Panopto for Students.
Accessing Panopto
The easiest way to access Panopto is by clicking Class Recordings in the left side course navigation menu of your Canvas course site. This item must be enabled in the menu before using it in your Canvas course. If you use Open Canvas for Penn Learners, this item will be called Panopto Recordings.
Enabling Panopto in Canvas
- Log in to Canvas.
- Click Courses and choose a course.
- Once in the course, enable Class Recordings in the course settings.
After you have accessed Panopto from your Canvas course for the first time, you may choose to access it in the future via a web browser. Log into the University of Pennsylvania Panopto environment in your browser. Most users will select Panopto Canvas Integration (if prompted), then log in with their PennKey and password.
If you have difficulty accessing Panopto, please refer to the school-based documentation provided in the Additional Resources section below or contact your Local Support Provider.
Content in the Class Recordings section of your course is not copied by default when you import a previous Canvas course. If you want reference copies of your videos to be placed in your new Canvas site, write “Copy Panopto recordings” under Additional Instructions on the Course Request Form or follow the steps below.
Copying Video Content
- In the new version of the course, click on Class Recordings.
- Click the three-dot icon (left of the + Subscribe button) and then click Settings.
- The Overview menu will appear. Scroll down to Course Video Copy and select Choose source folder.
- Find the folder where the videos that you want to copy over are housed.
- If desired, check the boxes above to include Zoom videos and scheduled recordings.
- Click Begin folder copy.
- You may receive a pop-up message from your browser to confirm. Click OK.
- The videos will begin to copy over as reference copies. It may take up to 24 hours. (The message “A course copy job for this folder is currently in progress” will display in the Course Video Copy settings until the copying process is complete.)
Please note that Panopto is only able to bring over one course folder’s worth of videos in total. Once the copy process is complete, you won’t be able to redo the procedure. If you make a mistake, delete the videos manually and re-copy the videos following the steps under Storing and reusing media below.
Using Panopto
Panopto is a powerful tool for recording, editing, captioning, and sharing audiovisual media. Some instructors use it to store the media for the course, while others record and edit presentations. Others may use it for student presentations.
This section provides an overview of several common options for using Panopto in your course.
Recording videos
Zoom-Canvas-Class Recordings integration
When you enable both Zoom and Class Recordings (Panopto) in your Canvas site, any meetings you start by clicking Zoom in the course navigation menu and record to the cloud will be automatically saved in the Class Recordings area. Videos usually populate within 24 hours of recording.
To use this integration:
- In your Canvas course site, go to Settings > Navigation and enable both Zoom and Class Recordings.
- Click Zoom in the course navigation menu and set up a meeting.
- Start the meeting in Zoom and record to the cloud.
- Within 24 hours, the recording will appear in the Class Recordings area.
If you record, but do not want a specific video to be available to students, we recommend hiding the Class Recordings menu item temporarily. Wait for the recording to appear, then delete it. Remember to re-enable Class Recordings after you delete the recording. This prevents students from accessing Class Recordings while the video is being processed.
Self or screen recording
Using the Panopto Recorder (available to download after clicking Class Recordings > Create), you can record voice, webcam, and on-screen activity. A browser version of the Panopto recorder is also built into the Canvas Rich Content Editor. Look for the small green Panopto logo button to record and post anywhere you find a content editor box inside Canvas.
Classroom recording
Some classrooms at Penn have capabilities that allow instructors to record class sessions. Find your classroom assignment using Locate your class in Courses@Penn. Scroll through the information to view Schedule and Location. Find more information about your assigned classroom by clicking Reserve Classroom Space in Courses@Penn, then accessing the Scheduling Portal. Use the support information for central pool classrooms to find the IT staff member who supports your classroom, or reach out to your Local Support Provider if you anticipate needing assistance with classroom recording.
Uploading videos or media
You can upload media directly to the Class Recordings area. Content stored there is available to everyone in the course.
Remember to add automatic machine captions to your uploaded media in accordance with Penn’s Digital Accessibility Policy.
Editing and sharing videos
Editing videos
Panopto enables you to edit videos you have recorded or uploaded. Follow Panopto’s step-by-step instructions for editing videos. As a safeguard, the editor tool does not cut video content but rather allows you to mark an area as “skipped”. Skipped content is not visible to students but can be restored if necessary.
- From within your Canvas course, click Class Recordings in the course navigation menu.
- Locate and hover over the video you wish to edit.
- Click the edit button that displays at the top of the video.

- The Panopto editor will launch in a new tab. Check the box to Preview cuts during playback. The video timeline will appear at the bottom of the screen, and you may zoom in as needed using the magnifying glass toggle in order to select portions you wish to remove.
Embedding videos in a Canvas Page
You may embed media directly onto a Canvas Page and add it to a Module once it is in the Class Recordings area.
We only recommend adding media to a Canvas Page if the videos live in the current site’s Class Recordings tab. Class Recordings from one course are not available in other courses unless sharing permissions are managed.
If you do not embed videos in a Canvas page, students can access your videos directly from the Class Recordings area of the Canvas course.
Sharing outside of Canvas
To share videos or media with someone at Penn who is not enrolled in your course, change the sharing settings of the media you would like to share to Your organization (unlisted). This will allow you to share the media without making it public on the web.
Student interaction features
Student media projects
You may create assignments in Canvas for students to record and post their own videos or other media to a shared assignment folder in Panopto. To access the folder and add their videos, students will either need to navigate to the assignment folder in Class Recordings or select the Panopto button (pictured below) to add content to the folder via the Rich Content Editor. Students can only use the button below if a student assignment folder has been created to store uploaded files.
In-video quizzes
Panopto has a feature that enables instructors to embed brief quizzes at specific points in a video. However, this quiz feature is much more limited than Canvas Quizzes. Please review Panopto’s Quiz documentation for more information and contact your Local Support Provider with any questions.
Recommended Practices
This section covers procedures for storing and reusing media, as well as important archival and copyright information.
Storing and reusing media
By default, Class Recordings are stored in a folder specific to a Canvas course and are only visible to users enrolled in that course. Please follow the steps outlined above in Copying Video Content to copy media content to a new course site.
If this process does not work, do the following within Panopto:
- Open Class Recordings in your Canvas site.
- Click the Open in Panopto button in the top right corner.
- On the left side navigation menu, click My folder.
- Inside My folder, create a new subfolder with a different title. Do not skip this step – My folder cannot be shared!
- Adjust the new folder’s sharing permissions to Your organization (unlisted).
- Add the videos you would like to reuse to this folder.
- You may now embed or link these videos on any Canvas site. Students will be able to access them via any Canvas course where you have provided links.
Archival policy
Penn archives Panopto content after a prolonged period of non-use. Please visit ISC’s page on Panopto for IT Support Staff for details on the current archival policies. We encourage instructors to check their collections and regularly play videos they want to keep for long-term use. Playing a few seconds of a video will prevent it from entering an archived state.
Copyright information
Penn makes students aware of their obligation to protect copyright while using Panopto through the End User License Agreement that appears the first time a student logs in to Panopto, which requires the student to acknowledge that class recordings and other recorded materials are subject to the Policy on Unauthorized Copying of Copyrighted Media.
An additional copyright notice that previously appeared on each Panopto video has been disabled. However, instructors and administrators may re-enable this additional notice for their course content if desired. Follow the instructions below or contact your Local Support Provider for assistance.
- Navigate to Penn’s Panopto environment.
- Select the Panopto Canvas integration option from the drop-down menu and click Sign in.
- Click the Browse button.
- Locate and click on the folder containing the videos where you wish to add the notice.
- Click the settings gear icon in the top right corner.
- Click Settings in the left side menu.
- Check the box to Show copyright notice on all sessions in this folder.
- Repeat for content stored in additional folders or subfolders.
