NameCoach for Students

NameCoach is a recording tool in Canvas that provides users with the opportunity to identify their pronouns, share the phonetic pronunciation of their name, and hear how others’ names should be pronounced.

Once a user updates their NameCoach profile, that profile will be saved in Canvas. It will then be available for listening in any course after the user clicks NameCoach in the course navigation menu.

This page is intended for students. Instructors should review NameCoach for Instructors.

Accessing NameCoach

If your instructor is using NameCoach in their course, you can access NameCoach through your course:

1. Log in to Canvas.
2. Click Courses and select your course.
3. Select NameCoach from the course navigation menu. If NameCoach is not listed, your instructor has not enabled it.

You may also access NameCoach through your Canvas profile:

1. Log in to Canvas.
2. Click Account > NameCoach Account Profile.

The first time you access NameCoach, you will be prompted to authorize NameCoach to access your account. Once you click Authorize, you will be taken to the NameCoach page.

NameCoach uses your email address to provide access to the People tab in Canvas and name recordings. No other information is gathered; it is only used to grant access to these recordings.

Recording Your Name

To record your name, click the Record Name button.

You can also add your pronouns and phonetic spelling of your name. Record your name using one of the three methods below:

Phone recording

1. Enter your phone number, and click Submit and Call Me. 
2. You will receive an automated call from NameCoach with instructions. 
3. You will be prompted to record. 
4. Press the # sign on your phone when you are satisfied with the recording. 
5. Click Submit and Finish to save the recording in NameCoach.

Web recorder

1. Click the Record button. You will be prompted to use your computer’s microphone.
2. Click Allow. Follow the prompt before speaking. 
3. Click Stop when you are finished recording. 
4. Click the Play button to hear the recording.
5. You can also choose to Record Again.
6. Click Submit and Finish to save the recording in NameCoach.

Uploader

1. Upload a .mp3 or .wav file of your name recording. 
2. Click Submit and Finish to save the recording in NameCoach.

Listening to Recorded Names

After you record, your NameCoach recording will be available in:

• Any Canvas site using NameCoach
• Your Canvas Account profile

You may re-record your name as many times as you wish by clicking Account in the global navigation menu in Canvas, then click NameCoach Account Profile > Edit your info.

You must click on NameCoach in your course menu for each course where it is enabled in order for your name to appear on the list of available recordings.

To listen to recordings of other people in your course, click the NameCoach item in the course navigation menu to listen to name pronunciations or view pronouns and phonetic name spellings.
