A LibGuide, known as a “Library Guide” in Canvas, may be embedded in a Canvas site to provide students with immediate access to a curated selection of course-specific research sources. To create a LibGuide, contact your Library Liaison/Subject Specialist.
Enabling Library Guides in Canvas
To use a LibGuide in your Canvas course, the Library Guides tool must be enabled. Library Guides should appear in the left side course navigation menu. If it does not, enable it by following the steps below.
- Log in to Canvas.
- Click Courses and choose a course.
- Once in the course, enable Library Guides in the course settings.
Embedding a LibGuide
The LibGuide you wish to select must be created before you can embed it in Canvas!
Any user with a teaching team role in Canvas can select and embed a LibGuide.
- Click Library Guides in the course navigation menu. This will open the LibApps Library Content Selection menu and allow you to link to a specific guide.
- From the LibGuides Site dropdown, select library.upenn.edu.
- From Content Type, select Full LibGuide.
- Select the specific guide you’d like to add from the Guide. You may also select an optional landing page from the Guide Page dropdown.
- Once you have made all your selections, click Embed Content. Caution! Be sure your selections are correct before completing this step!
- The Canvas site will refresh and return you to the course homepage. Click on Library Guides again in the course navigation menu and then View Content to view your guide.
If you accidentally embed the incorrect LibGuide, you will not be able to change it. Please contact canvas@pobox.upenn.edu to have it removed.
Student View
The teaching team view of Library Guides differs from the student view. When students select Library Guides in the Canvas course navigation menu, they see only the embedded guide. Teaching team members can view the embedded guide by selecting View Content.
