About JoVE

Penn has a subscription to JoVE Unlimited, which automatically updates all new JoVE content and products as they are released. By logging in with your PennKey, you can access all features included with our subscription: 

  • JoVE Core: Video textbooks that explain concepts taught in undergraduate courses through high-impact animations and real-life experiments.
  • JoVE Lab Manual: All-in-one solution for teaching undergraduate lab courses through engaging, comprehensive, and curriculum-focused videos.
  • JoVE Science Education: Video library dedicated to teaching the practice and theory of scientific experiments through engaging and easy-to-understand visual demonstrations.
  • JoVE Encyclopedia of Experiments: Online video encyclopedias of advanced research experiments for scientists in academia and biotech.

To get the most out of JoVE:

Accessing JoVE

You can access JoVE via the JoVE website proxied through Penn Libraries. It is easiest to locate content through the website first, then add it to Canvas.

If you would like to use advanced features in JoVE, we recommend creating a JoVE account:

  1. Visit the Sign In page on JoVE’s website.
  2. Click Create an Account
  3. Enter your Penn email address.
  4. Verify your email address via the message you receive in your inbox.

To sign into your account:

  1. Visit the Sign In page on JoVE’s website.
  2. Enter your Penn email address.
  3. Click Forgot Password?
  4. Set a password.

You’ll now be able to log in with your Penn email address and this password each time.

Adding JoVE Content to Canvas

Video content from JoVE can be embedded directly into the Rich Content Editor. JoVE content can also easily be integrated into Canvas using the LTI tool in Modules.

  1. Locate the Canvas course that you wish to connect with JoVE. 
  2. Click +Module, name the module, and then click Add Module to save.
  3. Within your new module, click the + icon. 
  4. From the dropdown menu of the pop-up window, select External Tool, then JoVE LTI Tool.

  5. Click Continue in a new window.
  6. Select Videos, Quiz, or Playlist from the Choose Your Content Type options. You can also use the search bar to find item(s) by title. Click the + icon to add an item to your selection(s). You may include multiple content items at once.

  7. After your selections are complete, click Submit.
  8. The URL and Page Name fields will auto-populate in Canvas. Make customizations to the additional fields as needed. Resize or scroll to the bottom of the pop-up window to see all available options.
  9. Click Add Item to save.

  10. The item should now appear in the Module. To view, click the item name, then follow the prompt on the subsequent page to open the video in JoVE.
