For faculty, researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate students engaged in high-level research who are interested in checking their own materials for plagiarism, we have licensed iThenticate. This tool is the scholarly/publishing version of Turnitin.
Note that iThenticate requires users to agree to an external End User License Agreement. We recommend you carefully read this agreement in full before using iThenticate.
Accessing iThenticate
Only materials authored or co-authored by University of Pennsylvania instructors, researchers, graduate students, and undergraduates engaged in high-level research intended for publishing may be processed through iThenticate. Materials produced by users outside this group, including applicants for admission to any University of Pennsylvania program or school, may not be submitted through iThenticate. Materials produced by undergraduate students in registered University courses should be processed via Turnitin.

Using iThenticate
- Go to the iThenticate home page and log in with your Penn email address and the password provided in your account notification email. Please change your password after logging in for the first time.
- Go to My Documents and click the tab for Settings.
- In this area, you can select to exclude items in quotes, bibliographic items, and phrases, as well as exclude content based on a percentage or word count under “match size.” Additionally, you may select resources to check your documents against under “Limit search to these repositories.” CrossCheck is a repository of scholarly publishing material provided by many commercial vendors. Once you have chosen your desired settings, click Update Settings.
- To check your document, go to the Folders tab, and under My Documents, select Submit a document.
- Provide the document with a title and a last and first name for the document author.
- Click Browse to locate your document. Acceptable file types include Word, Word XML, Text, PostScript, PDF, HTML, WordPerfect, WPD, and RTF.
- Click Add Another File to check additional documents.
- When finished, click Submit.
- The originality report may take a few minutes to generate. When it is complete, click % matching to view the report. The document will highlight matches with links on the right of the corresponding content.
