The Assignments page displays all assignments that your instructor has created in Canvas. By default, assignments are sorted in the following order: overdue, upcoming, undated, and past assignments.

Availability and due dates will display under each assignment. Availability dates refer to dates when it is possible to make a submission. Due date refers to the date by which the assignment should be turned in.

You cannot submit work before or after an assignment’s availability dates, or for an assignment your instructor has categorized as “no submission”, such as an in-person activity or presentation. Contact your instructor with any questions.

Canvas has three assignment categories that allow for graded work:

  1. Assignments Canvas assignment icon for uploading files or typing responses
  2. Quizzes Canvas classic quizzes iconCanvas new quizzes icon for online exams or surveys
  3. Discussions Canvas discussions icon for posting and replying to discussion boards

After clicking an assignment’s name on the Assignments page or from a course module, you can read directions, view a rubric (if provided), and make a submission by clicking Start Assignment.

Submitting an Assignment

Your instructor can assign any of these submission methods, including:

  • File Upload: upload a file from your computer, usually a Word or PDF file. Your instructor may restrict files by type (ex: .docx, .pdf)
  • Text entry: type directly into the Rich Content Editor
  • Website URL: share a link to content on an external website
  • Media Recording: upload audio or video files directly
  • Student Annotation: annotate a file provided by your instructor

You may only submit using one method.

If your instructor is using Turnitin, you will be required to agree to Turnitin’s terms of service immediately before submitting your assignment. You cannot run your paper through Turnitin beforehand.

Submission Details

After submitting your work, we recommend that you return to the Assignments page and click the assignment name to verify that your work has been submitted successfully. On the right side, there should be a check mark, timestamp, and a link to click for Submission Details. A copy of the submission will also be available in your user files.

If your instructor allows for more than one attempt and you have already submitted once, you will see a New Attempt button. After your assignment has been graded, you can view grades and feedback.
