Teaching teams may enter grades in several ways:

Grades entered in any of these places will appear automatically in the gradebook. However, using SpeedGrader provides the most streamlined grading experience. SpeedGrader allows you to view the student work directly in the DocViewer, annotate the work, grade the work, leave comments, and use rubrics for grading, if applicable.

To sort students by group in SpeedGrader, enable the Large Course: “Launch SpeedGrader Filtered by Student Group” option in Settings > Course Details.

There are many ways to access SpeedGrader:

  1. In Grades: Hover over the Assignment column title, click the three dots, and select SpeedGrader.
  2. In Grades, open the Grade Detail Tray by selecting a Gradebook cell, then select the Grade Detail Tray icon (the arrow). Click on the SpeedGrader link.
  3. In Assignments: Click the Assignment name, then SpeedGrader.
  4. In Quizzes:
    • Classic Quiz: Click the Quiz name, then SpeedGrader.
    • New Quiz: Click the Quiz name, click the three dots, then SpeedGrader.

Grading Submissions

SpeedGrader may slow down if multiple course staff are grading simultaneously. If possible, limit access to one user at a time for optimal loading performance.

Upon entering SpeedGrader, submissions are ordered by student last name. You can switch students by clicking the arrows to the right and left of the student’s name in the top right. Clicking the drop-down arrow will display a list of all student names. Dots indicate the student has submitted. Check marks indicate that the student has been graded. Grayed-out student names without a dot indicate the student has not submitted.

Below that area, you can assign a grade and view a rubric, if applicable. Below, you can leave a comment, or upload or record an audio or video comment. To save your comments, you must click the Submit button; grades will save automatically.

On the left side is the DocViewer, which displays the student’s submission. Tools along the top row allow you to download the submission, rotate the item, zoom in or out, switch to full screen, select text (for copy/pasting), annotate, highlight, strikethrough, and draw.

If a student has submitted the same assignment multiple times, the DocViewer will only display the most recent submission. Use the drop-down menu to select from a list of all submissions.

Releasing Grades

Grades will be visible to students immediately after being entered if your Gradebook has an Automatic Grade Posting Policy. If you implemented a Manual Grade Posting Policy, you will need to release the grades to make them visible to students.
