New Quizzes is an assessment tool that will eventually replace Classic Quizzes. Both Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes can be used in the same course site. Please see Migrating to New Quizzes for information about Penn’s transition to New Quizzes and how to migrate a Classic Quiz to a New Quiz.
Instructors can use New Quizzes to create quizzes and exams with various question types. Quizzes will appear under Quizzes in the course navigation menu and can be added to Modules. New Quizzes offers expanded features and new question types; however, the tool has not yet gained complete feature parity with Classic Quizzes.
Is New Quizzes Right for My Course?
New Quizzes can be duplicated and copied to other courses. Students can submit New Quizzes using a web browser on a computer (recommended) or through the Canvas Student mobile app. New Quizzes also allows for a more seamless student experience for exams using the Respondus LockDown Browser.
Stick with Classic Quizzes if you:
- Prefer to bulk-download all student submissions to file-upload questions
We recommend reviewing Instructure’s feature comparison tables or talking with your Local Support Provider to determine if New Quizzes is a good fit for your course.
New Quizzes does not yet support polls. Consider using Classic Quizzes, Poll Everywhere, or another tool (such as Qualtrics) to create a poll.
Creating a New Quiz
Follow Instructure’s step-by-step guide for creating a New Quiz or read more about specific aspects of New Quizzes by expanding the sections below.
Question types
New Quizzes includes several question types not available in Classic Quizzes: Hot Spot, Categorization, Ordering, and Stimulus Content. It also contains new options for Essay and Multiple Choice questions. Each quiz can include a mix of automatically and manually graded questions.
Question creation:
- There is no partial credit without penalty.
- Stimulus questions cannot be used in Item Banks because the association between the stimulus and attached questions is lost.
- Hot Spot questions may not be fully accessible to students using assistive technology.
- Automatic response feedback must be added to assessment questions before students start a quiz.
Editing:
- New Quizzes supports LaTeX to create and edit mathematical equations.
- To link to the course file in a quiz question, copy/paste the file URL into the text editor.
- Questions in an Item Bank must be edited in the Item Bank.
Item banks
Use Item Banks to randomly pull all questions or a specific number of questions from a pool. This is a good way to add variety to an exam or keep similar questions together. Follow Instructure’s detailed guide on managing item banks for New Quizzes.
Managing item banks:
- Classic Quiz Question Banks cannot be imported directly into New Quizzes as Item Banks. However, you can import questions manually into an Item Bank by exporting the Classic Quiz.
- Item Banks can be managed within any assessment in New Quizzes.
- You can also open New Quizzes to manage Item Banks by creating a new assessment.
- If an Item Bank is deleted, questions added to a quiz individually will remain in the quiz. Question groups that use a random number of Item Bank items will not be available after the Item Bank is deleted.
- Once an Item Bank is deleted, it loses its statistical link to reports.
Sharing settings and permissions:
- Item Banks must be manually shared with other instructors/TAs in the course if they will need editing access.
- Item Banks can be shared with other users in Canvas if the users have a teacher, TA, or admin role. Sharing an Item Bank allows other users to view, edit, and use the Item Bank.
- If you copy a quiz using the Send to or Copy to options, Item Banks will be copied and shared automatically.
Questions pulled from the same Item Bank must be worth the same number of points on the quiz.
Quiz settings
Inside a New Quiz, click the Settings tab to customize its settings.
If you wish to prevent students from seeing their scores or submissions immediately after submitting the quiz, check the option to Restrict student result view. To release scores, open the quiz settings and uncheck Restrict student result view.
Accommodations
If a student discloses that they require a testing accommodation, instruct them to contact the Weingarten Center for assistance. After you have received an accommodations letter from the Weingarten Center detailing the student’s testing accommodations, you can apply these accommodated settings in New Quizzes.
We highly recommend that you set up the accommodations in Canvas at least three days before the assignment or exam to account for availability dates and extra time.
You can set up the following accommodations in New Quizzes:
- Extended time: For a timed exam, permit additional time by clicking Build and navigating to the Moderate tab. Click the student’s name, use the drop-down menu under Time adjustments to grant the extended time, and click Save. Remember to adjust the availability date and/or due date accordingly if the exam will lock at a pre-determined time.
- Due date extension: Add individual availability dates for a student who needs an extension.
The Weingarten Center can assist you with interpreting a student’s accommodations letter. More details are available on the Accessibility & Accommodations in Canvas page.
Publishing a quiz
Before you publish the quiz, be sure to:
- Add availability dates so students cannot access the quiz until the start time.
- Review the quiz settings to ensure that Hide results from students is enabled if you do not want students to see their results immediately.
- Preview the quiz to view it as a student user.
Grading & Feedback
First, add scores for any manually-graded questions (such as Essay and File Upload) in SpeedGrader. Note that final quiz scores cannot be directly edited in the Gradebook.
Releasing scores
When you are ready for students to see their submissions and the correct answers:
- Open the quiz and click Build to access the New Quizzes quiz builder. In the Settings tab, un-check Restrict student result view. This allows students to see their quiz submissions.
- If using a manual posting policy in your Canvas Gradebook, click Grades. Next to the quiz title in the Gradebook, click the 3-dots menu to select Post Grades > Post. Students will then be notified of their quiz scores.
Quiz submissions are only available to students while the course is active. They will not be able to access their quiz submissions after the term has ended, but they may still view their score in the Gradebook.
Regrading
You can regrade any automatically-graded question, but this should be done only after all students have submitted the quiz. When you regrade a question for one student, the change will be applied to all students who received that question.
To regrade a question, open the Canvas Gradebook, click the 3-dots menu to the right of the quiz name, and select SpeedGrader. From any student’s submission, navigate to the question you need to regrade and click Regrade.
