Instructors can currently select either Classic Quizzes or New Quizzes for assessments. New Quizzes will eventually replace Classic Quizzes as the default Canvas quiz platform. For assistance, email canvas@pobox.upenn.edu.

An individual Classic Quiz can be migrated to a New Quiz using the options below. The best choice will depend on whether the Classic Quiz links to Question Banks or includes questions in Question Groups. No matter which migration option you choose, it is important to preview and closely review each New Quiz before publishing to make sure it has migrated correctly.

Before migrating, please note the following:

  • Equations: Mathematical equations migrated from a Classic Quiz can now be directly edited! With the question in edit mode, click on the equation, then click Edit Equation to be taken to the LaTeX editor.
  • Surveys: Because New Quizzes does not yet include a survey feature, surveys will be migrated as a standard graded quiz. Zero-point questions can be used as an alternative. If you want to use an anonymous survey, consider using Classic Quizzes, Poll Everywhere, or another tool (such as Qualtrics) to generate a survey for your class.
  • Text (no question): This question type will migrate to New Quizzes as a Stimulus question. You can move additional questions to attach to a Stimulus question.

New Quizzes Transition Timeline

The following timeline was developed in consultation with Local Support Providers to minimize disruptions to teaching and learning. This timeline is subject to change as new information and features become available. For more information about the transition to New Quizzes, review Instructure’s New Quizzes Hub.

Fall 2025 and Spring 2026:

  • Consider using New Quizzes in your Fall 2025 or Spring 2026 course(s) if New Quizzes meets your assessment needs. Review Instructure’s feature comparison to determine whether New Quizzes meets your assessment needs. There are still some feature gaps compared to Classic Quizzes.
  • Review the New Quizzes page for guidance on getting started with New Quizzes.

Ahead of Summer 2026:

Migrate Quizzes (Basic)

Go to the Quizzes area of the course navigation menu and click Migrate from the 3-dots menu next to the quiz title. This will create a duplicate, unpublished version of the quiz in the New Quiz format.

This option is only appropriate for Classic Quizzes that do not contain Question Banks or Question Groups.

Migrate Quizzes with Question Banks

Question Banks cannot be directly migrated; however, the questions within them can be. Follow these steps to migrate questions in a Question Bank. For help, contact Canvas Support.

  1. Create a new Classic Quiz with the name of the Question Bank.
  2. On the Questions tab, create a New Question Group. Do not skip this step – it’s required to create the Item Bank in New Quizzes!
  3. Click Find Questions
Classic Quizzes Questions tab screen with "find questions" button indicated
  4. Select the desired Question Bank and click Select All toward the top of the window to select all questions in the bank. Scroll to the bottom of the window and select the group you just created from the drop-down menu. Then, click Add Questions to add all questions from the bank to the Question Group.
  5. Save the quiz.
  6. Return to the Quizzes area of the course navigation menu and click Migrate from the 3-dots menu next to the quiz. This will create a duplicate, unpublished version of the quiz in the New Quiz format, and all of the previously grouped questions will be converted to an Item Bank shared with the course.

Once all questions have been added to an Item Bank in New Quizzes, you will be able to add questions from the Item Bank to any New Quiz in the course.

Migrate Quizzes with Question Groups

Question Groups in Classic Quizzes will migrate as Item Banks. To migrate a Question Group to an Item Bank, go to the Quizzes area of the course navigation menu and click Migrate from the 3-dots menu next to the quiz title. This will create a duplicate, unpublished version in the New Quiz format, and all of the previously grouped questions will be converted to an Item Bank shared with the course.

If you do not want the questions to be converted to an Item Bank, the questions must be moved outside of Question Groups before migrating a Classic Quiz to New Quizzes. There are two ways to move questions out of a Question Group in Classic Quizzes:

  1. Drag and drop the question from within the group to anywhere outside of the group box.

  2. Use the move dialog menu by clicking the dots to the left of a question name, then select where to move the question.

Once all questions have been removed from Question Groups, Save the quiz. Then, go to the Quizzes area of the course navigation menu and click Migrate from the 3-dots menu next to the quiz title. This will create a duplicate, unpublished quiz version in the New Quiz format.
