The Calendar lets faculty, staff, and TAs create events and assignments in their courses. The Scheduler feature can create groups of appointment slots for which students can sign up.
Calendar
The Calendar allows you to view assignment due dates and events for all your courses in one place by week, month, or agenda list.
Notifications that appear in the Coming Up area on the right side of your Canvas dashboard or in List View are generated by the Calendar.
Access your primary Calendar in Canvas by clicking Calendar in the global navigation sidebar. There, you can view course Calendars and filter by course using the sidebar.
To sync your Canvas Calendar with another calendar app, click Calendar Feed in the bottom right corner of the screen to import events to iCal, Google Calendar, or Microsoft Outlook. Syncing Canvas Calendar to an external calendar such as Google or Outlook may take up to 24 hours to complete.
Adding events and appointments
Click the + sign at the top right to add events to a course calendar or to your personal calendar. An Event creates a general event, an Assignment creates an assignment in a course, a My To Do creates a reminder event for you, and an Appointment Group creates a list of available time slots from which students can select.
Students must be enrolled in the course to sign up for an appointment via that course’s Calendar.
Appointment Groups
A Scheduler Appointment Group is generally a set of multiple time slots from which students can select to sign up for an appointment with you.
Select the Appointment Groups tab in the Calendar, then configure the settings:
- Name: refers to the entire appointment group (e.g., “Lunch with Professor”)
- Location: add information if it will be the same for all appointments. If locations will vary, leave it blank.
- Select Calendars: choose the applicable course(s).
- To limit signups to certain sections, expand the calendar tree by clicking the arrow to the left of the course name, then use the checkboxes to select the sections.
- Restricting to section only works for individual appointments, not team-based ones.
- Group Category: for team-based appointments, check this box and select the group set. Students must be signed up for a Group Set before you press Publish.
- Date and Time Range boxes: fill in your first appointment’s date, start time, and end time. More rows of entry blanks will appear. Time slots you add here constitute the set of appointments from which students will choose.
- Divide: allows you to create consecutive appointments within a single time range. Fill in the date and overall time range. Under that box, add the desired length “into equal slots of ___ minutes.” Then press Go. The time range will be split accordingly into separate consecutive appointments.
- X: click this icon to remove any unwanted slots.
- Publish: makes appointment groups visible to students. After publishing, you can add more time slots but can’t remove those already created.
