Migrating to New Quizzes

New Quizzes will eventually replace Classic Quizzes as the default quiz engine. New Quizzes was enabled for all Penn users on October 1, 2021. Instructors and TAs now have the option to select either Classic Quizzes or New Quizzes for their assessments.

For assistance with New Quizzes, email canvas@pobox.upenn.edu.

Overview

Once New Quizzes is enabled for your course, individual Classic Quizzes can be migrated to New Quizzes using the options listed below. The best option will depend on whether the Classic Quiz links to Question Banks or includes questions in Question Groups.

If you are not sure which option is best for your quiz, contact Canvas Support.

No matter which migration option you choose, it is important to preview and closely review each New Quiz before publishing it to make sure everything migrated correctly.

Important Notes

Before migrating a Classic Quiz to New Quizzes, please be advised of the following:

  • Formulas:
    • Migrated Classic Quizzes that contain formulas will be imported as images rather than editable MathJax.
    • If using LaTeX, you can copy/paste LaTeX into the MathQuill window or use the “\(” and  “\)” delimiters to type directly in the Rich Content Editor.
  • Surveys: Because New Quizzes does not include a survey feature, surveys will be migrated as a standard graded quiz. Zero-point questions can be used as an alternative. If you want to use an anonymous survey, consider using Classic Quizzes (until December 2022), Poll Everywhere, or another tool (such as Qualtrics) to generate a survey for your class.
  • Text (no question): This question type will migrate to New Quizzes as Stimulus questions. You can move questions you want to be attached to a Stimulus question.

Migrate Quizzes (Simple)

Use the following process to migrate Classic Quizzes that do not contain Question Banks or Question Groups.

Use the Migrate option from the Quizzes area of your course. This will create a duplicate, unpublished version of the quiz in the New Quiz format.

To migrate a quiz

  1. Click on the Options menu to the right of the quiz (indicated by three dots)
  2. Choose the Migrate option.

You can learn more about this option from the Canvas Guide.

Migrate Quizzes with Question Banks

Use the following process to migrate Classic Quizzes that link to Question Banks.

Question Banks cannot be directly migrated to a bank within New Quizzes. Instead, please follow these steps to migrate items that are in a Question Bank.

If you need help, contact Canvas Support.

  1. Create a new Classic Quiz with the name of the Question Bank.
  2. Click on the Questions tab and click on the Find Questions button.  Select Find Questions
  3. Select the correct question bank and click on Select All toward the top of the screen to select all questions in the bank. Then, click Add Questions to add all questions from the bank into the Classic Quiz.
  4. Save the Quiz.
  5. Return to the Quizzes area from the course menu and use the Migrate option from the Quizzes area of your course. This will create a duplicate, unpublished version of the quiz in the New Quiz format. If you are familiar with how to export quizzes in QTI format, an alternative option is to import questions from a QTI package into an item bank in New Quizzes

To migrate a quiz:

  1. Click on the Options menu to the right of the quiz (indicated by three dots)

Once all questions have been added to an item bank in New Quizzes, you can add questions from an item bank to an assessment in New Quizzes to any New Quiz.

Migrate Quizzes with Question Groups

Use the following process to migrate Classic Quizzes that link to Question Groups.

Because Question Groups in Classic Quizzes do not import effectively to New Quizzes, any questions within Question Groups should be moved outside of Question Groups before migrating Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes.

To move questions from Question Groups in Classic Quizzes, either:

  1. Drag and drop the question from within the group to anywhere outside of the group box.
    Drag and drop questions
  2. Or, use the move dialog menu by clicking on the dots to the left of any question name to select where to move that question. Move question dialog menu

Once all questions have been removed from Question Groups, Save the quiz.

Then, use the Migrate option from the Quizzes area of your course. This will create a duplicate, unpublished version of the quiz in the New Quiz format.

To migrate a Classic Quiz:

  1. Click on the Options menu to the right of the quiz (indicated by three dots)
  2. Choose the Migrate option.
